Clarke University Athletic Director Curt Long announced today that Dan Mathews, a two-time, first-team NCAA All-American volleyball player at Ohio State University, has been named the university's head men's volleyball coach.
A native of Milwaukee, Wis., and a 2008 graduate of Ohio State, Mathews was a three-time, first-team Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) All-Conference selection and was named the MIVA Player of the Year in both 2007 and 2008. He played on two conference championship teams (2007, 2008), two conference tournament championship teams (2005, 2008) and two NCAA semifinalist teams (2005, 2008).
"Dan has had an extensive playing career and he is now focused on developing student athletes," said Long. "Our players are looking forward to his leadership."
Mathews was named the 2005 MIVA Freshman of the Year and earned MIVA Conference Tournament MVP honors in both 2005 and 2008. He served as the Buckeyes team captain in 2008 and finished his career ranked third in assists with 5,291.
Off the court, Mathews was a four-time Scholar-Athlete and a three-time Academic All-Big 10 selection. He was named the recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honors, which is awarded annually to one graduating male and female student-athlete of each Big Ten member institution for outstanding achievement in athletics and academics.
Mathews has been playing professional volleyball since wrapping up his collegiate career. He has been a member of the Chênois Volleyball Club, of Geneva, Switzerland, the past two years. Mathews was a member of the USA Men's National Team during the winter training period and the Al-Ain Sport and Cultural Club Volleyball Team (United Arab Emirates) in 2008-09. He played for Voley Guada, of Guadalajara, Spain, in 2009-10 and Voley Amriswil, of Amriswil, Switzerland, in 2010-11.
Mathews has been actively involved in numerous camps and clinics since 2005, including programs with the University of Wisconsin, Ohio State University, Marquette University, Gold Medal Squared and the US Elite Volleyball.
Clarke will open its 2014 season at St. Xavier University on Jan. 14.
