Ryan Kelly (So., Brookfield, Ill.) allowed just two hits and one run in the final five innings and
Cory Davidson (Fr., Epworth, Iowa) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs Friday to lead Clarke College to a 6-5 non-conference road win over Division I Western Illinois University, of Macomb. The victory, Clarke's 10th in its last 11 games, lifted the Crusaders season mark to 13-14.
Clarke spotted Western Illinois (3-13) a 4-1 lead after three innings of play. Coach
Chad Harris' squad took a 1-0 lead in the third when
Dan Spain led off the inning with a single and scored later on
Dean Molitor's two-out RBI single to left field. Western Illinois answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning off Clarke starter Chris Magarian. Clarke plated three runs to even things up in the fourth. Davidson had an RBI single and
Pete Lister a two-out, two-run double to left in the inning. The Crusaders made it 6-4 with single runs in the fifth and eighth.
Nick Bowles doubled in the eighth for Clarke and crossed the plate on Davison's RBI single to center. Western Illinois scored its final run of the game in the eighth inning.
Davidson and Lister each had two RBIs for Clarke.
Kelly is now 1-0.
Clarke will open a three-game Midwest Collegiate Conference weekend home series against Grand View University with a noon doubleheader on Saturday at A.J. Spiegel Park in Peosta. The final game of the series will be played at noon on Sunday.
