Joquetta Rolle, of Cocoa, Fla., and Casey Sawyer, of Hemet, Calif., have been named the recipients of the 2008-09 Clarke College Student-Athlete Newcomer of the Year Award. The award is presented annually to an outstanding male and female student-athlete who are in their first year of competition at the college.
Rolle competed in both basketball and track and field this past season. The 5-7 forward ranked second nationally in NAIA Division II rebounding this past winter, averaging 12.6 boards per game for Coach Zareth Gray's Crusaders. She was an MCC honorable mention all-conference pick. As a member of Coach Adam Hinders track and field squad, Rolle earned MCC outdoor all-confernece honors in the long jump. She as a member of the MCC academic all-conference team in both sports.
Sawyer, a 6-foot outside hitter, led Coach Chris Miron's men's volleyball squad in in kills (419), kills per set (3.84) and reception percentage (.974), and ranked second in both digs (222) and digs per set (2.04) this past seson. He was named the recipient of the team's Most Valuable Teammate Award, Most Consistent Offense Award, and Never Give Up Award.
