Clarke College celebrated homecoming in the right fashion Saturday afternoon by claiming a Midwest Collegiate Conference soccer sweep of William Penn University. Clarke registered a 5-1 win in the women's matchup before posting a 4-1 victory in the men's contest.
Bekah Willich and
Maria Vilar each scored two goals for Clarke, which outshot the visiting Lady Statesmen 16-7. Willich was credited with an assist on Vilar's second goal that put the hosts up 5-1.
Willich opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest. Vilar made it 2-0 with a goal at 30:55 and the Crusaders led 2-1 at the break.
Clarke outscored William Penn 3-0 in the final half.
Morgan Sullivan opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 62:12.
Clarke improved to 3-3-3 overall and 1-0-1 in MCC play, while William Penn fell to 3-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league action.
Clarke will entertain MCC rival Viterbo University at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
In the men's contest, Clarke made the most of just nine shots in a 4-1 win.
Mirek Baran opened the scoring at 11:56 on an assist from
Mark Dismang. William Penn's Tim Eyer evened things up with a penalty kick, but Dismang closed out the first half scoring with an unassisted goal at the 40:01 mark and gave the Crusaders a lead they would not relinguish.
Matthew Carlson and
Ismail Hamza tallied second-half goals for Clarke, which improved to 4-2-2 overall and 2-0 in MCC play. Alexander Weinstein had an assist on Hamza's goal.
William Penn is now 2-5-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Clarke will return to action Wednesday, hosting MCC foe Viterbo University at 4 p.m.
