Clarke Head Baseball Coach Chad Harris has announced the hiring of Curt Dixon, of McAlester, Okla., and Dan Spain, of Delmar, Iowa, as new assistant coaches for the baseball program.

Curt Dixon

Dixon, who currently pitches for the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League, has spent the last two seasons as the assistant baseball coach at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark., in addition to pitching professionally. He is also a graduate of U of O and holds several pitching records there including most career wins (24), wins in a season (9), most career strikeouts (205), and was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball his senior year, an honor he shared with a player from the University of Arkansas and the University of Arizona.

Dixon currently holds a 5-1 record for the 2010 season, with an ERA of 3.19, 40 strikeouts, and 24 walks in 56.3 innings. Dixon began the season pitching for the Big Bend Cowboys (Texas) in the Continental League where he was 4-0 before a mid-season trade sent him to Kalamazoo.

"I am really excited to get to Clarke," Dixon stated. "The opportunity to work with Coach Harris and what he has going is something I can't wait to be a part of. I hope I can help the Clarke baseball program take the next step to be an elite team in the MCC, as well as helping the student-athletes in the Clarke baseball program by enhancing their knowledge in the game of baseball and in the game of life."

Dixon will serve as the varsity pitching coach and will serve as the head coach for the new junior varsity baseball program at Clarke. He will also be responsible for junior college recruiting, assisting in fundraising, and for leading the Clarke baseball clinics.

Dan Spain

Spain, a Clarke College and Maquoketa High School graduate, has also been hired to help lead the baseball program. Spain batted .331 his senior year for Clarke and was penciled in at shortstop for all but two games that season. He spent the 2010 season as a student assistant for Clarke baseball, working with the hitters and infielders. Spain will be responsible for recruiting the state of Iowa and for working with the Crusaders' infielders and hitters. He will also be an assistant coach for the junior varsity baseball program at Clarke and will help with Clarke baseball clinics and fundraising. Spain spent last summer coaching with the Maquoketa High School baseball program

"I came to this program as a player hoping to take Clarke baseball somewhere it had never been, and now I have the opportunity to develop the future of Clarke baseball," said Spain. "I expect to learn a lot from Coach Harris, our team, and from myself. I look forward to beginning my coaching career at Clarke. There is something special going on in the Clarke baseball program and it is a dream to be able to be a part of it. I truly feel blessed to be able to be associated with such a wonderful school and also to have the opportunity to work with such great faculty and staff."

Coach Harris is excited to have both coaches joining his program.

"It's my responsibility to, not only bring quality baseball players to our program, but to also surround this program with hard working, knowledgeable coaches and I am blessed to have a chance to have both Dan and Curt working for us at the same time," said Harris. "I've known Curt for a long time now, and I've watched him progress through high school, college, and now the pro level. He will certainly be an asset to our program, from teaching the game of baseball to helping lead our young men through their lives as college students. Dan has been a member of this program for a couple of years now and I've watched him grow into someone who is only going to help move this program forward. He had an audition so-to-speak as a student-assistant and by doing so well in that role, I am proud to have him as a main assistant now. Both of these guys are going to have great careers in college baseball and it's exciting to see them with us early in their journeys."
