Dino Ramic and Jared Hill each scored first half goals and goalkeeper Luke Van Meveren recorded four saves in Clarke University's 2-0 season-opening home win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
With the victory, the Crusaders earned the Super Fred Cup, awarded to the winner of each Clarke-UW-Platteville meeting. It was the first time Clarke captured the cup since its introduction in 2006. The award gets its name from Clarke coach Sean Esterhuizen's coach at Platteville, Fred Eberlein, who died June 16.
Ramic, the 2008 Midwest Collegiate Conference newcomer of the year who has rejoined Clarke's program this season, opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 3:22 mark and Jared Hill (So., Burlington, Iowa) made it 2-0 with a goal off a corner kick 19 minutes later.
Ramic, a sophomore from Pasco, Wash., had eight shots, including four on goal for the Crusaders, who outshot the Pioneers 15-9.
Jared Kuehl had five saves in goal for UW-Platteville (0-1).
Clarke will host Lawrence University at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Crusaders will face their first road test of the season on Sunday, taking on UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
