Basketball - Mon, Feb. 21, 2011

The Midwest Collegiate Conference Championship basketball bracket is complete. Don Adams' Crusader squad garnered the league's No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 William Penn (21-7, 12-4 MCC) in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a first round matchup. Jerry Drymon's club will begin tournament play Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the No. 7 seed against second-seeded Mount Mercy (19-9, 12-4 MCC) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Crusader women (9-20, 5-11 MCC) dropped both meetings with William Penn this season. In a Jan. 15 contest between the two teams in Oskaloosa, Clarke played toe-to-toe with the Lady Statesmen for one half, trailing just 31-29 at the break. But William Penn took control in the second half and prevailed, 78-45, despite 14 points from Clarke point guard Brittany Collier.

The Crusaders' chance at revenge on Clarke Senior Day on Feb. 12 was denied by the Lady Statesmen. Again, Clarke made it close at halftime with the score 31-30 in William Penn's favor. Christa Subbert and the Lady Statesmen ended the game on a large run and walked away with an 80-63 victory. Subbert poured in 30 points.

The Clarke men (12-17, 5-11 MCC) split a pair of contests with Mount Mercy. The Mustangs got a road victory at the Kehl Center, 76-69, on Jan. 2. Mount Mercy's David Campbell led all players with 18 points in a tight game in which the Crusaders struggled to score in the game's final minutes. Charles Nunn paced Clarke with 14 points.

The Crusaders rebounded for their most impressive win of the season on Jan. 27 when they won at Mount Mercy, 80-64. Clarke shot 51.9 percent from the field while holding the Mustangs to 30.4 percent. Drymon got a balanced effort from his roster as four players scored in double-figures and another, Brock Zins, posted seven points and 10 rebounds. Elliott Carr led all players with 18 points off the bench.
