Clarke University and Viterbo University split a Midwest Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader Wednesday at AJ Spiegel Park in Peosta, Iowa. The Crusaders took game one 6-3, while the visiting V-Hawks bounced back to take the nightcap, 7-1.
Sergio Cruz went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Luis Reyes collected two hits in three at-bats and scored three times to lead Clarke in the opener. Reyes also scored a run in the win. Caleb Johnson went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Crusaders, who broke away for a 3-all score with a pair of runs in the fourth and a single run in the sixth.
Matt Lozano improved to 3-6 with the win.
In the nightcap, the V-Hawks outhit Clarke 12-6 and scored all the runs they would need when the pushed two runs across the plate in the first inning. Viterbo (8-25, 6-12) plated four more runs in the second and added a single run in the seventh.
Luis Reyes and Sergio Cruz both went 2-for-3 for Clarke. Nico Piscopo plated Clarke's only run with an RBI single in the fifth.
Clarke is now 10-25 overall and 4-13 in MCC play.
